The mood was joyful and festive on the 4th Street Saloon on Saturday, Dec. 17, and never simply because the Vikings’ historic comeback win against the Colts was playing within the background. Much to the delight of the little kids, a pair of Santa Clauses were on the scene to make their dreams come true.
The “Northside Santa Toy & Food Giveaway,” made possible through donations from patrons and community partnerships, transformed the bar right into a family-friendly hot spot.
This yr, the saloon had a White Santa Claus, Mike Oker, and a Black one, artist Charles Caldwell. Each of the Santas, with the help of volunteers, helped shop for toys.
“I like the giving a part of Christmas ’cause it’s higher to present than to receive,” said Caldwell. “I’m thankful for all of the sponsors and support that went into this event. This will likely be an annual event on the 4th Street Saloon.
“The saloon gave away over $10,000 price of toys to the children but didn’t have enough,” continued Caldwell. “Hopefully, next yr they will add more partners with support so this event will be what it’s presupposed to be—an exquisite experience in North Minneapolis. We do care in regards to the kids and the seniors.”
Oker added, “Our Northside kids are an important resource we have now. Now we have to be the village. I like the undeniable fact that everyone got here together to present the Northside kids toys, food and fun.”
Akir Norris, a young volunteer for the event, said it was necessary to return to assist out because “We helped save people’s Christmases and got here to be nice to others. Christmas means to have a good time, be kind, and it will not be about presents, it’s about family.”
