The mood was joyful and festive on the 4th Street Saloon on Saturday, Dec. 17, and never simply because the Vikings’ historic comeback win against the Colts was playing within the background. Much to the delight of the little kids, a pair of Santa Clauses were on the scene to make their dreams come true.
The “Northside Santa Toy & Food Giveaway,” made possible through donations from patrons and community partnerships, transformed the bar right into a family-friendly hot spot.
This 12 months, the saloon had a White Santa Claus, Mike Oker, and a Black one, artist Charles Caldwell. Each of the Santas, with the help of volunteers, helped shop for toys.
“I really like the giving a part of Christmas ’cause it’s higher to provide than to receive,” said Caldwell. “I’m thankful for all of the sponsors and support that went into this event. This shall be an annual event on the 4th Street Saloon.
“The saloon gave away over $10,000 value of toys to the youngsters but didn’t have enough,” continued Caldwell. “Hopefully, next 12 months they will add more partners with support so this event may be what it’s alleged to be—an exquisite experience in North Minneapolis. We do care concerning the kids and the seniors.”
Oker added, “Our Northside kids are a very powerful resource we now have. We’ve to be the village. I really like the proven fact that everyone got here together to provide the Northside kids toys, food and fun.”
Akir Norris, a young volunteer for the event, said it was necessary to come back to assist out because “We helped save people’s Christmases and got here to be nice to others. Christmas means to rejoice, be kind, and it isn’t about presents, it’s about family.”
