A St. Paul man has been charged in a hit-and-run case that left two women injured after a post-fireworks traffic altercation Sunday in Hudson, Wis.
Considered one of the injured women was a bicyclist who was not involved within the altercation and suffered broken bones and collapsed lungs, based on a criminal grievance.
Thaddeus John Smith, 34, was charged on nine counts, including operating a vehicle while intoxicated and causing injury, a hit-and-run causing great bodily harm and first-degree recklessly endangering safety.
In response to reports from Hudson police, Smith, his female partner and two children, ages 6 and 1, had traveled to the St. Croix River waterfront for fireworks on Sunday evening.
Smith and his partner shared drinks with friends, after which got into their 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee to drive home.
While waiting in line to depart the Hudson dike, Smith’s vehicle got here into contact with a 2022 Kia Sorento operated by Travis Lee Heffron of Hudson. It shouldn’t be clear which vehicle was at fault, but witnesses say neither vehicle appeared damaged.
Witnesses observed Heffron exit his vehicle to instigate a fight with Smith, who remained in his vehicle. Heffron yelled at Smith and called him homophobic slurs, based on one police report.
Heffron then returned to his vehicle and backed it into Smith’s vehicle, at which point each men exited their vehicles and commenced arguing.
A female occupant of Heffron’s vehicle, identified as Chelsea Lynnette Yorek, exited the vehicle and commenced recording their interaction.
It’s unclear what happened first, but when police arrived on the scene, they found that Heffron had injured his hand by punching out a window of Smith’s vehicle, Yorek’s foot and ankle had been run over, and one other woman, identified as Barbara Espy, who had been riding a bicycle in the realm, had been struck by a vehicle and was in critical condition.
Police also reported that Heffron and Yorek smelled of alcohol.
Heffron, Yorek and Espy were transported to the hospital. Espy suffered a broken pelvis, broken ribs, the collapse of each lungs, and will face the amputation of 1 foot. The extent of Heffron’s and Yorek’s injuries weren’t clear in criminal complaints, but were described as not life-threatening.
Smith was arrested on the ramp to westbound Interstate 94 after ignoring several stoplights and traffic control officers.
It shouldn’t be clear whether Heffron or Yorek will probably be charged.
Smith faces as much as eight felony counts. If convicted of a success and run with great bodily harm, Smith could withstand $50,000 in fines and 15 years in prison.
