St. Paul’s first-ever ‘Snow Summit’ goals to teach public, alley captains

The town of St. Paul wants you to raised understand snow — as in snow removal, snow operations and snow safety.

The primary-ever “St. Paul Snow Summit” will likely be held this Saturday at town’s Public Works Garage at 891 Dale St.

From 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., Public Works will host an open house with exhibits on snow removal, snow safety and winter activities, coordinated with St. Paul Parks and Recreation and the St. Paul Fire Department. Various vehicles and equipment will likely be on display, and two food trucks can have items for purchase.

While St. Paul doesn’t provide snow plowing in alleys, residents often select a snow captain for his or her block who coordinates with neighbors to rent a snow removal company. From 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. within the second floor conference room, a morning “alley captains conference” will likely be geared toward alley captains and can feature suggestions, tools and techniques for organizing.

As a part of alley captain training, St. Paul Public Works will host a presentation dubbed “Snow Operations 101,” offering a have a look at snow removal and snow emergencies. That session will run from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. The session will likely be repeated for most people from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m.

From 10 a.m. to 11 a.m., five current St. Paul alley captains will host a panel on their efforts.

From 1 p.m. to 2 p.m., members of the Mayor’s Advisory Council for Individuals with Disabilities will host a presentation on sidewalk shoveling and safety.

Most people is invited to drop off gently used hats, scarves, mittens and non-perishable food items for the free community cupboard at 891 Dale St. More information is online at stpaul.gov/snowsummit.
