St. Paul and Xcel Energy Center roll out Frozen 4 red carpet again

When the team bus pulls up outside the Frozen 4’s host arena – whether it’s Tampa or Boston or Buffalo or wherever — and the players traipse down a red carpet, thronged by screaming fans, Kelly McGrath at all times feels a little bit sense of parenthood.

“That got here out of this constructing in 2011. It was our idea, and now they do it all over the place, it’s just a traditional a part of the Frozen 4,” said McGrath, Xcel Energy Center’s general manager and executive director. “We wish to remind them that it was a St. Paul idea, and the fellows just feel like rock stars coming in.”

College hockey’s biggest show

On Thursday, Friday and Saturday, the ‘X’ will host college hockey’s biggest show for the fourth time, and McGrath is working alongside the University of Minnesota and Visit St. Paul to be sure that the red carpet is rolled out. That will not be only for the 4 teams coming to the sector, but for throngs of fans from Colorado, Massachusetts, Michigan and all across the hockey-loving world.

Before the opening faceoffs on Thursday, when Denver faces Boston University after which Michigan plays Boston College, myriad preparations will happen contained in the constructing, while coaches and players spend hours watching video to find out their best strategies once the puck is dropped.

On the X, after hosting greater than 40 NHL games annually, together with welcoming greater than 100,000 prep hockey fans to downtown St. Paul each February and March for the women and boys state tournaments, there are not any worries about what is going to occur on the ice sheet.

“We do hockey,” McGrath said. “That’s our strength and our bread and butter, so when an event just like the Frozen 4 chooses Minnesota and Xcel Energy Center, I don’t worry concerning the hockey. Three games, we all know the way to try this pretty much.”

Clean, secure and welcoming

The following job is to make certain St. Paul and the sector are clean, secure and welcoming for those making the trip to the Twin Cities, whether it’s for his or her first trip or their one centesimal to the X. Organizers from Minnesota have traveled to recent tournaments — hockey and other college sports — in other cities to see what they do in Recent York or Florida or elsewhere and if there are ideas to be borrowed to make for a greater experience.

“We’re going to have equipment trucks ready for the teams on the airport in order that they don’t should play that Tetris game under the bus to suit every part,” said Tom McGinnis, an assistant athletic director on the U of M and a former chair of the NCAA Men’s Ice Hockey Committee. “In 2018 we were the primary place to have student-athlete lounges on the hotels. You spend five days here either within the locker room or within the hotel room, so we’re attempting to expand the student-athlete lounge on the hotel, in order that they have a special places where they’ll go play video games or do other things and have a special place to hang around relatively than simply watching Netflix of their rooms.”

So fans don’t just sit of their hotel rooms, they’ll again offer Frozen Fest, which is a gathering spot on the RiverCentre, adjoining to the sector, with games, food, drinks and giveaways. RiverCentre may even host the Friday evening awards, culminating with the awarding of the 2024 Hobey Baker award.

A novel yr

This will probably be the seventh time the Frozen 4 has come to St. Paul, and just the second time that there is not going to be a team from Minnesota among the many quartet that advanced out of the regional round. The since-demolished St. Paul Civic Center hosted the tournament in 1989, 1991 and 1994. The three previous tournaments on the X have concluded with an in-state team — Minnesota in 2002, Minnesota Duluth in 2011 and 2018 — cutting up the nets after the title game. Organizers admit it’ll be unique this time around, with no team from this state, and even this time zone, participating.

McGrath said the gang will probably be different consequently, with many locals coming to look at college hockey’s top teams no matter where they’re from, and plenty of fans from other parts of the country coming here, in a form of photo negative of two years ago, when Minnesota and Minnesota State Mankato faced off within the Frozen 4 opening round in Boston. She added that the demand for tickets continues to be significant, with many available on the secondary market.

“It’s still a destination event for school hockey fans, so the NCAA put their tickets on sale and former buyers got the primary crack,” McGrath said. “The tickets were mostly sold by concerning the first of the yr. There’s at all times the ticket exchange where people should buy and sell, but for all intents and purposes, we’ve moved the tickets.”

Looking ahead

The 2025 tournament will probably be held in St. Louis and the 2026 Frozen 4 will head to Las Vegas for the primary time. Beyond that the schedule will not be set, but there’s a likelihood that based on past success, we will probably be back in St. Paul again before too long.

“We’ll proceed to bid on hosting this event,” McGinnis said. “It’s got a fantastic history and tradition of being here in St. Paul and in Minnesota, and we’ll need to proceed to do every part we will to maintain bringing it back here.”
