A hearth at a St. Paul homeless encampment engulfed six tents Wednesday morning, based on the fireplace department.
Nobody was within the tents on the time and no injuries were reported, said St. Paul Deputy Fire Jamie Smith.
The hearth department was called about 6:45 a.m. to the encampment in the realm of the Bruce Vento Nature Sanctuary, below the intersections of U.S. 52 and Interstate 94. Firefighters quickly contained and extinguished the blaze, Smith said. Nearby railroad tracks weren’t affected by the fireplace.
The reason for the fireplace is under investigation.
“Materials in tents are extremely flammable,” Smith said. The hearth department, which is involved in education at encampments, recommends people use secure heating equipment and keep it clear of things that may easily start on fire.
